Samuel P. Huntington’s “civilization paradigm” of the early 1990s is considered by many to be a “self-fulfilling prophecy”. Under the influence of the events of the past 10-15 years, such voices emphasize the so-called war between the West and Islam. Meanwhile, not only the general public but also some experts interpret the Muslim world as if it were monolithic, a zone in which all pro­cesses and events are determined by Islam – or even a totalizing Islam. Also, Islam is viewed in these cases as an autochtonous entity, a closed and coherent system of norms and beliefs that provides explanation for everything taking place in the world of Islam. This essentialist and culturalist, “totalizing” approach to Islam, atemporal in its per­spective, is characteristic of traditional Orien­talists (Bernard Lewis), “radical experts” of Islam (Daniel Pipes), scholars of the social sciences, as well as politicians, journalists, and men of the street, so much so that it may be called the prevalent interpretation of the past fifteen years.
